WASHINGTON (AP) - A team led by the University of California is getting the management contract for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California, despite past problems at the lab while under UC management.
The decision was confirmed by the office of Rep. Ellen Tauscher, D-Calif., in advance of a formal Energy Department announcement scheduled later Tuesday.
The decision comes after a series of financial and security gaffes at the nation's premier nuclear weapons labs Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico led the federal government to require competitive bidding for their management contracts.
