HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Riot police violently broke up a demonstration by dozens of lawyers protesting the arrest of two colleagues outside Zimbabwe's High Court on Tuesday, beating some of them with riot sticks, the independent Law Society and witnesses said.
President Robert Mugabe has repeatedly warned demonstrations would not be tolerated and police had the right to crush dissent and "bash" perpetrators of unrest.
A senior police officer, using a bullhorn, warned the group of about 30 lawyers, wearing traditional legal robes and white court collars, that their protest was illegal under a ban on demonstrations in the Zimbabwe capital.
