CHICAGO (AP) - Mayor Richard Daley introduced a measure on Wednesday that would give him direct oversight of the agency that reviews police misconduct allegations instead of the police superintendent.
Daley hopes to restore public confidence in the department that was embarrassed by highly publicized incidents involving off-duty officers, including the alleged beating of a female bartender caught on video.
The department was widely criticized for reacting too slowly as well as initially charging the officer who allegedly beat the bartender with a misdemeanor before the videotape was released. Prosecutors later charged the officer with several felony charges, and Police Superintendent Phil Cline recently announced he would step down once a replacement is found.
