CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) - Gunfire broke out Thursday in Guinea's capital near a military base where soldiers had been threatening to go on strike after a dispute over their pay, witnesses said.
The shots could be heard in neighborhoods flanking the Alpha Yaya Diallo Camp, and soldiers contacted by telephone said they were taking to the streets after learning that only their superiors had gotten a raise.
"The government promised to give a raise to all the soldiers in the camp. But to our great surprise, only the old guard got a raise this morning. So what about us?" one soldier said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.
