KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A woman left prison after nearly 21 years Thursday, the second Missouri woman in a week to be freed from a life sentence given for the death of an abusive husband.
Lynda Branch 54, was convicted in 1986 of fatally shooting her husband at their home. She contends she got control of the gun only after her husband threatened to shoot her and her daughter.
On May 4, another woman who was battered, Shirley Lute, was released from the same northwest Missouri prison under similar circumstances. Lute, 76, had been imprisoned for 29 years. She was convicted of aiding her son in killing her husband, whom she claimed physically tortured and mentally tormented her.
