SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) - Costa Rica's security minister said an armed man took eight hostages Friday at the Russian Embassy in Costa Rica, but the ambassador told a local television station by phone that there were no hostages.
Security Minister Fernando Berrocal said five of the eight were quickly released, but that the Russian ambassador, Valery Nikolayenko, was still being held.
But in a telephone call to a local television station, Nikolayenko said he and the others were not hostages and had remained in the building to help authorities deal with the armed man.
