DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings flipped the formula that had been knocking them out early in the playoffs. Detroit was outshot handily by the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night and the puck was often in its end. But two ugly power-play goals went in off the same opposing player and made those facts moot in a 2-1 victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.
Tomas Holmstrom scored with 4:54 left in regulation after a shot hit him while standing in front of goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere, then dropped to the ice before defenseman Francois Beauchemin nudged it into the net.
The Red Wings were fortunate to score the game's first goal, too.
