ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - Security officers will be out in force for Algeria's parliamentary elections Thursday, but many voters may stay away, frightened by a recent surge in violence and frustrated by a political field dominated by the ruling party.
The ballot comes five weeks after suicide bombings killed 30 people in the capital and as security forces continue a military campaign against extremist groups in Algeria's mountainous interior. A group called al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa claimed responsibility for the April bombings.
Authorities have tightened security following those attacks and ahead of the vote. Some traffic, sports events and street markets will be restricted for the poll.
