BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - A woman was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for killing her 7-year-old adopted son in a notorious 1995 child abuse case that forced sweeping changes in the state's child-protection system.
Heather Ciambrone, 38, was sentenced immediately after a jury convicted her of first-degree murder. She had been sentenced to 55 years after pleading no contest in 2001, but a judge allowed her to withdraw the plea in January.
Ciambrone and her husband, Joseph, were accused of torturing, beating and starving their son, Lucas, who weighed less than 30 pounds and was covered with bruises when he died at a hospital in May 1995. Joseph Ciambrone is serving a life prison sentence.
