NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The city's Lakefront Airport has long been the preferred airfield for business executives and celebrities because it avoids crowds of commercial passengers and offers easy access to downtown.
But the airport has been without an active control tower since Hurricane Katrina, and pilots and air traffic controllers are increasingly concerned about safety after reports of several close calls.
The Federal Aviation Administration hopes to restore limited air traffic control services at Lakefront by late summer roughly two years after the storm damaged hangars, the terminal and the tower, which has mold and termites.
