DALLAS (AP) - Opponents of a voter-approved ordinance banning landlords from renting apartments to most illegal immigrants asked a court Wednesday to halt its enforcement, alleging the law is unconstitutional.
The federal filing was the third injunction request seeking to stop enforcement of the law voters approved Saturday in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch. The latest filing alleges the regulation is too vague and denies apartment owners and managers due process.
"What you have is an ambiguous ordinance that puts landlords in a position for which they have little or no training and subjects them to strict criminal exposure and legal liability," said William A. Brewer III, who represents several apartment complexes suing Farmers Branch over the regulation.
