CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A rarely seen male loggerhead turtle was being treated at an animal hospital Thursday after rope from a crab pot became wrapped around a fin, officials said.
The loggerhead was rescued off the South Carolina coast Wednesday. Volunteers and crewmen from the Cape Island Turtle Project towed the disabled turtle to shore, lifted the 300 pound, 4.5-foot reptile into a boat and then onto a truck.
Kelly Thorvalson, coordinator of the Sea Turtle Rescue Program, said the rope was wrapped around the left front flipper. The rope didn't cut to the bone, meaning the flipper can be saved.
