Ga. Republican Avoids War in Campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Republican front-runner in the race to succeed a late Georgia congressman jumps at the chance to talk about immigration or Southern values. Ask him about the war in Iraq, and he clams up.

"Iraq has not been a big thing in our district," Jim Whitehead said recently.

Whitehead, a former state senator, is running in a special election to succeed Republican Rep. Charlie Norwood, who died of cancer in February.
