EU OKs Cap on Cell Phone Roaming Charges

Der von der EU anvisierte Zeitplan fuer die Senkung der Roaming-Gebuehren verzoegert sich um mindestens zwei Wochen. Die geplante Preisgrenze von 49 Cent netto fuer Mobilfunkgespraeche im EU-Ausland koenne fruehestens am 29. Juni im Amtsblatt veroeffentlicht werden, erklaerte der deutsche Wirtschaftsstaatssekretaer Joachim Wuermeling am Mittwoch, 23. Mai 2007, als Vertreter der EU-Ratspraesidentschaft vor dem Europaparlament in Strassburg. Damit koennen die Verbraucher wohl fruehestens im August von der Neuregelung profitieren. Now they will be able to make a cheap mobile phone call home to say they made it.

But while bargain flights are a result of a well-functioning, competitive market, the roaming fees mobile operators add to the cost of a call made or received abroad will be regulated by the EU amid complaints that the system hasn't worked.

EU lawmakers overwhelmingly endorsed a deal Wednesday to cap roaming fees in the 27-nation bloc, slashing the phone bills of millions of executives and holidaymakers.
