Banned Sect Blamed for Kenya Beheadings

By ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY

Seven people have been arrested in connection with beheadings that are believed to be the work of a shadowy religious sect inspired by the Mau Mau rebellion against colonial rule, police said Wednesday, May 23, 2007. The six beheadings over the weekend came after weeks of simmering violence blamed on the outlawed Mungiki sect, which has been accused of extorting money from minibus drivers who provide the main form of public transport in Kenya. (AP Photo/Sayyid Azim)BANANA HILL, Kenya (AP) - A banned religious sect is terrorizing villagers on the outskirts of Kenya's capital, leaving behind a trail of beheaded corpses and raising fears of a resurgence in violence ahead of this year's elections.

Police said Wednesday they have arrested seven people and launched a manhunt to quash the Mungiki, which emerged in the 1990s inspired by the Mau Mau rebellion against colonial rule. The group was officially banned in 2002.

"We are very keen to find any of those people associated with Mungiki," Eric Kiraithe, a national police spokesman, told The Associated Press. "It is an illegal association."
