WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal safety investigators on Friday formally recommended a permanent restriction on planes flying low over New York's East River following the fatal crash of Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle and his flight instructor.
The Federal Aviation Administration had previously indicated its plan to make permanent a ban on small, fixed-wing planes flying over the river, which runs along Manhattan's East Side, unless the pilot is in contact with air traffic controllers.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the crash that took place Oct. 11, 2006, formally sent its recommendation to the FAA.
