DILI, East Timor (AP) - Foreign peacekeepers fired warning shots and tear gas to disperse gangs battling each other Wednesday after an explosion wounded four people, officials said.
A 23-year-old man was admitted to the Dili National Hospital in a coma with severe face injuries, said Americo dos Santos, head of the emergency unit. Three others were treated for less-serious wounds caused by the blast, he said.
National Police spokesman Mateus Fernandes said the violence took place near the headquarters of the Fretilin party, which is struggling to hold on to power after being blamed for widespread violence a year ago that killed 37 people and sent 155,000 fleeing their homes.
