PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair endorsed South African efforts to mediate a solution to Zimbabwe's deepening crisis on Friday, toning down denunciations of Zimbabwe's authoritiarian president.
Blair has said 83-year-old Robert Mugabe brought social and economic ruin to a once prosperous southern African nation and former British colony.
On Friday, he voiced support for the mediation of South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is pursuing a policy of quiet diplomacy, even though some Western nations have pressed for a more confrontational approach with Mugabe, accused of undermining democracy.
