Australian Train Crash Death Toll at 11

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 4:31:28 AM

A aerial view of a passenger train after it collided with a truck on a rail crossing in southern Australia Tuesday, June 5, 2007 killing at least eight people and injuring up to 50, police said. Authorities suggested the death toll could go higher since rescuers were still sifting through the wreckage. (AP Photo/Bendigo Advertiser)MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - Emergency crews on Wednesday removed the last bodies of 11 passengers killed when their train was hit by a truck a day earlier on a rail crossing in southern Australia, police said.

Another two people who had purchased tickets and were thought to be trapped in the wreckage of two derailed carriages have been accounted for, Victoria state police spokeswoman Alison Noonan said Wednesday.

Families of victims held each other and wept as they inspected the scene for the first time late Wednesday as the last bodies were being removed, TV news footage showed.
