BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) - The government Wednesday freed 17 people who had been arrested for rebel activities, following the terms of a peace accord that aims to return the restive nation to stability after more than a year of sporadic insurgency.
General Prosecutor Firmin Feindiro said the men were released in accordance with the April 13 deal signed by the government and rebel committees. The agreement required the release of all those detained over rebel activities.
The 17 represent all those detained for rebel activity at a national level, Feindiro said. He said Central African Republic will next deal with those arrested abroad. He did not elaborate.
