SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korea lifted a de facto ban on American beef imports Friday, after the U.S. confirmed that only two shipments meant for domestic consumption were exported mistakenly, officials said.
South Korea shut its doors to U.S. beef in December 2003 after an outbreak of mad cow disease in America. It partially reopened its market last year, but agreed to accept only boneless meat from cattle under 30 months old, which are thought to be less at risk of carrying the illness.
Earlier this week Seoul said that it would not issue import certificates, however, until the U.S. explained how two banned shipments, intended for domestic consumption, arrived in South Korea.
