EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Jared Borgetti and Nery Castillo scored and prohibitive favorite Mexico survived an early scare from Cuba in a 2-1 victory Friday night in the opening Gold Cup match for both sides.
Playing with about half of his usual regulars, Hugo Sanchez won his first competitive match since taking over as manager of El Tri in November.
Playing before a largely partisan Mexican crowd of 20,230 at Giants Stadium, Mexico was in control from the opening touch, while Cuba struggled to get the ball out of its own half.
