SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A beached coal ship carrying hundreds of tons of fuel and diesel oil remained intact Sunday as crews rushed to prepared a plan for salvaging the massive freighter.
Officials had worried that unusually strong waves would crack the hull of the Panama-registered ship Pasha Bulker, which became stranded on a sand bank early Friday, possibly spilling the fuel oil and diesel into the sea.
"It has taken a pounding, there's no question about that," New South Wales state maritime chief Neil Patchett told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. "But the hull is so far holding up."
