UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Sudan's president expressed hope that negotiations under way in Ethiopia will lead to agreement on a joint United Nations-African Union force to help end the four-year conflict in Darfur.
In a June 4 letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon obtained Monday by The Associated Press, President Omar al-Bashir said his government was still studying a proposal from the two organizations for a 23,000-strong hybrid force.
Earlier Monday, Ban's spokeswoman Michele Montas told reporters that al-Bashir had unequivocally accepted the hybrid force, but details must be worked out.
