SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - The U.S. military is probing how guards failed to prevent the death of a Guantanamo Bay detainee last month, an apparent suicide in one of the most closely monitored detention camps for suspected al-Qaida and Taliban members, the top commander said Tuesday.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Navy Rear Adm. Mark H. Buzby defended the controversial Guantanamo detention operation, saying interrogators are extracting intelligence from detainees and getting it to "operators on the battlefield."
"That to me is the critical element that makes Guantanamo so special and why I think it is going to endure," Buzby said. "We're going to hear a lot of calls in the future and are already hearing them to close Guantanamo ... but the sheer fact of the matter is, given the elements of global war on terror that we're faced with, I think that it is a necessity."
