WASHINGTON (AP) - Monique Currie scored a career-high 25 points, and Tree Rollins got his first victory as an WNBA coach in the Washington Mystics' 86-69 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night.
The victory for the Mystics (1-8) ended the second worst start in WNBA history, a tumultuous losing streak that included a trade, a player retirement and a coach's resignation. Washington's futile beginning trailed only the 2002 Detroit Shock, who started 0-13.
Alana Beard scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half for the Mystics, who blew the game open with a 18-2 fourth-quarter run. Beard, who started the game 0-for-6, made a pair of 3-pointers in the run, including the shot that gave Washington a 14-point lead matching the team's biggest in any game this season.
