MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Suspected Islamic insurgents attacked Ethiopian soldiers in the Somali capital, residents said Thursday, killing one civilian and raising fears of a return of the violence that rocked Mogadishu over a month ago.
Residents in northern Mogadishu said one of several attacks late Wednesday took place at a former pasta factory used as a base by some of the Ethiopian troops who have been in Somalia in support of its transitional government.
A dozen heavily armed men rode up in a pickup truck and fired mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades at the base, said Hassan Unaaye, who was outside his house listening to the radio when the fighting sent him running back indoors. He said the battle lasted for about 15 minutes.
