On its first day of full rule in Gaza, Hamas on Friday granted amnesty to Fatah leaders, signaling that it seeks conciliation with the defeated forces of moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. (AP Photo/ Eyad Albaba)WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House expressed support Friday for the moderate government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas after a military takeover of Gaza by the radical group Hamas.

"We believe that the pathway to peace is through the negotiating table — not through violence and not through terrorism," White House deputy press secretary Scott Stanzel said, accompanying President Bush on a trip to Kansas.

Hamas held control of Gaza and occupied Abbas' captured office. The takeover formalized the separation between Gaza and the West Bank, which lie on either side of Israel.
