BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - Maria Sharapova defeated 16-year-old Tamira Peszak 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Saturday to reach the DFS Classic quarterfinals in a match that was postponed two days because of rain.
The top-seeded Sharapova faced the prospect of playing three more matches by the end of the weekend in the grass-court warm-up event for Wimbledon. Sharapova next was to face Elena Likhovtseva in a quarterfinal later Saturday. But more rain started falling immediately after her match against Peszak.
Third-seeded Daniela Hantuchova also advanced, defeating Eleni Daniilidou 7-6 (3), 6-4 to earn a quarterfinal matchup with Marion Bartoli of France.
