YENAGOA, Nigeria (AP) - Troops drove out gunmen holding some two dozen workers and soldiers hostage in a Nigerian oil installation Thursday, the military said. About a dozen gunmen were killed.
The counterattack came four days after the gunmen seized the flowstation run by Italian energy giant Eni SpA in southern Nigeria, said Male Ochaguwuba, a military spokesman. He had no details on military casualties.
The seizure of the flowstation, which connects oil pipelines, and the military's counterattack threatened a wider outbreak of violence in a region where criminal and militant gangs roam the creeks and swamps in speedboats.
