LAS VEGAS (AP) - It took Ricky Hatton three fights in the United States to finally make the smashing debut he wanted. All he can do now is hope both American fans and Floyd Mayweather Jr. were paying attention.
Hatton's one-punch knockout win Saturday night over Jose Luis Castillo just might have been the breakthrough the British fighter needed to convince fans outside his native country that he is the real thing at 140 pounds.
His countrymen needed no such convincing. They came by the thousands, singing and cheering their hero on as Hatton won his biggest fight since stopping Kostya Tszyu two years ago in England.
