UNESCO has officially renamed the site of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland to make clear it was run by occupying Nazi forces, a spokesman said Thursday June 28, 2007. Committee spokesman Roni Amelan said Thursday the new name was "Auschwitz-Birkenau. German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940-1945)." (AP Photo/Petr David Josek, FILE)WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - UNESCO designated a city in Iraq where mosques have come under attack as an endangered world cultural treasure Thursday and revised its name for the Auschwitz death camp in Poland to emphasize Nazi Germany's role.

The United Nations' heritage group also took the unprecedented step of removing world heritage status from Oman's Arabian Oryx Sanctuary site, home to the rare antelope.

UNESCO also named several new world cultural sites, including the Sydney Opera House, the Iwami Ginzan silver mine in Japan, the Parthian Fortresses of Turkmenistan and the Red Fort in New Delhi built by Mogul emperors.
