BOSTON (AP) - Former first-round draft choice Jacoby Ellsbury recorded his first major league hit on Saturday night, legging out a grounder to shortstop in the third inning and just beating the throw at first.
Ellsbury received a standing ovation from the sold-out Fenway Park crowd. The ball was pulled out of the game and, after on-deck hitter Kevin Youkilis pretended to throw it into the crowd, was set aside as a keepsake for the 23-year-old outfielder.
In his first at-bat in the second inning, Ellsbury nubbed the ball in front of the plate and was tagged out by Rangers catcher Gerald Laird without ever leaving the batter's box.
