David Wells used a sharp curveball to beat Sergio Mitre in a matchup of hometown pitchers and Brian Giles scored twice on fielder's choices to give the San Diego Padres a 3-1 win over the Florida Marlins on Monday night.
The NL West leaders, who had only three hits, won for the fifth time in six games. The Padres improved to 4-2 when they have three hits or fewer.
