MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Philippine marines searching for a kidnapped Italian priest fought Muslim insurgents on a southern island Tuesday, and officials said four soldiers and two suspected Abu Sayyaf guerrillas died.
Ten marines remained unaccounted for late Tuesday, Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan said. Nine other marines were wounded in the firefight in Tipo Tipo town on Basilan island, the marines spokesman said.
About 50 troops went to the area to check on reports of sightings of the Rev. Giancarlo Bossi, a 57-year-old missionary from Milan who was kidnapped by gunmen on June 10.
