French President Visits North Africa

Tuesday, July 10, 2007 10:15:23 PM
By HASSANE MEFTAHI

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, left, is greeted by his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Tuesday, July 10, 2007 upon his arrival in Algiers. Sarkozy, visiting former colonies in North Africa on Tuesday, said France should recognize its colonial history but not repent for it. Bouteflika, who has long demanded France apologize for colonial-era crimes, greeted Sarkozy at the airport in Algiers. (AP Photo/Patrick Kovarik, Pool)ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy took the frosty edge off ties with Algeria on Tuesday during his first visit outside Europe, saying France and its colony for 132 years must bury a rocky past and reinvent the future.

He announced an invitation from President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for a state visit to Algeria in November.

"I came here neither to injure nor to excuse myself," Sarkozy said after meeting Bouteflika, referring to a rift between the two nations that has festered since French parliament passed a law in 2005 to put a positive spin on colonial history.
