BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Union said sports federations should not be exempt from EU anti-monopoly and labor laws, as it unveiled a strategy Wednesday for dealing with the growing impact of sports in Europe, economically and socially.
Proposals from the EU's executive branch covered doping and racism in stadiums, but attention was focused on how the European Commission will balance European laws with demands by sports federations to set their own rules.
EU Sports Commissioner Jan Figel said at a news conference that European regulators would continue to judge the compatibility of sports rules with EU law on a "a case-by-case basis."
