U.S. Envoy to Zimbabwe Leaves Country

Sunday, July 15, 2007 12:07:51 PM
By ANGUS SHAW

Two women walk past an empty display window in Harare, Friday, July, 13, 2007. Harare police have impounded minibus taxis and fined drivers who had not complied with government orders to cut fares, stranding commuters on the way to work, state media reported. At least 100 taxis had been impounded since Wednesday, state radio said, in the latest crackdown since the government ordered price cuts of about 50 percent in response to the country's rampant inflation. Since the order was issued June 25, consumers have wrestled over sudden bargains, staples have disappeared from grocery shelves, and chief executives have been hauled into court for failing to cut prices. (AP Photo)HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Outgoing U.S. Ambassador Christopher Dell ended his three-year term in Zimbabwe with a message for the citizens of the troubled southern African country: "Keep the faith. Things will change soon."

Dell, an outspoken critic of President Robert Mugabe's human and democratic rights record, left Saturday for his next post as ambassador of Afghanistan.

Dell has predicted total economic collapse in Zimbabwe by the end of the year and said in one farewell interview with an independent newspaper last month that the government was "doing regime change to itself" through economic mismanagement and a crackdown on prices.
