SEATTLE (AP) - Marcus Thames made certain Sunday wouldn't be a repeat of the World Series for Jeff Weaver. Thames hit a two-out, three-run homer off Weaver in the fourth inning, and Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings in Detroit's 11-7 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Thames finished with three hits and four RBIs, as two of the hottest teams in baseball over the past six weeks split an entertaining four-game series.
Verlander, and his overpowering fastball that reached 100 mph on Sunday, became the sixth American League pitcher to reach 11 wins. He stumbled early, giving up runs in the first two innings, but then allowed just four hits over his final five innings.
