ARMONK, N.Y. (AP) - Paul Horn, who has led IBM Corp.'s research division for 11 years, is retiring and being replaced by an executive who had been overseeing IBM's strategies on technical standards and intellectual property.
Under Horn, 60, IBM maintained its status as the No. 1 patent generator in the United States. IBM spends $6 billion a year on what it calls research, development and engineering, making it one of the top industrial research operations in the world.
Horn joined IBM in 1979 after serving as a physics professor at the University of Chicago. Upon leaving IBM, he will become a scientist in residence at New York University.
