MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - Liberia's former House speaker and an ex-military commander have been charged with treason for their involvement in an alleged coup plot, officials said Friday.
Former House Speaker George Kaukau and ex-military commander Charles Julu were among five people arrested in the plot, said Gabriel Williams, a deputy minister of information.
Under Liberian law, treason carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.
