Wednesday, July 25, 2007 3:08:48 PM
By MOHAMED OLAD HASSAN

A nurse treats a wounded man at the Medina hospital after he was injured during an grenade attack, Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. A masked man lobbed a hand grenade at police patrolling this restive city Wednesday, sparking a gunbattle that killed one civilian, witnesses said. The attack is the latest in a string of bloodshed in Mogadishu, which has seen little peace since government troops backed by Ethiopian forces drove an Islamic movement out of the city in December. (AP Photo/Farah Abdi Warsameh)MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - A masked man lobbed a hand grenade at troops patrolling Mogadishu on Wednesday, sparking a gunbattle that killed one civilian, witnesses said.

Later in the day, a grenade hurled at police in the city's central market wounded nine. On Tuesday, a pregnant woman and two other civilians were killed in grenade attacks near the market, a witness said.

The violence came as the country's National Reconciliation Conference, meant to heal the wounds of 16 years of conflict, has also been targeted by insurgents since it opened July 18. The Red Cross says at least 10,000 people have fled the capital since it began.
