YENAGOA, Nigeria (AP) - Kidnappers released the elderly mother of a Nigerian state official Friday after holding the woman for nearly two weeks, an official said.
Bayelsa State government spokesman Ebimo Anungo did not say if a ransom had been paid for the release of the woman, whose son is the speaker of the Bayelsa State house of assembly. The woman, who has been described as elderly, was in good health after being abducted July 25, he said.
Hundreds of people have been kidnapped in Nigeria's oil-rich south in the last two years. Most of them have been foreign oil workers; more than 150 foreigners have been seized so far this year alone. The attacks, and a string of bombings, have cut production in Africa's largest oil exporter by about a quarter.
