Runoff in Sierra Leone Elections

Thursday, August 23, 2007 7:09:29 PM

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP) - The top two candidates in Sierra Leone's presidential race will face each other in a runoff after neither won enough votes to win the election outright, the electoral commission said Thursday.

Opposition leader Ernest Bai Koroma finished first with 44 percent, compared with 38 percent for Vice President Solomon Berewa of the ruling party, said Christiana Thorpe, who heads the country's independent electoral commission.

A candidate needed to win 55 percent to avoid a runoff. A date for the second round is expected to be announced on Saturday.
