Solomons War Hero Who Saved JFK Honored

By GEORGE HERMING

This image provided by the US Navy shows Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter presenting Eroni "Aaron" Kumana with the flag from USS Peleliu for his courageous efforts more than 60 years ago while aboard the ship Wednesday Aug. 22, 2007. During World War II, Kumana rescued Lt. John F. Kennedy, and his PT-109's crew following the ships collision with a Japanese destroyer near Pudding Island on August 2, 1943. Six decades after Aaron Kumana helped rescue young U.S. naval officer John F. Kennedy from Japanese capture in 1943, the U.S. Navy officially recognized its debt to the Solomon Islander, who for years was believed dead and not honored. (AP Photo/US Navy - Patrick D. Kennedy from Japanese capture in 1943, the U.S. Navy officially recognized its debt to the Solomon Islander, who for years was believed dead and not honored.

Kumana, from the western Solomon island of Rannonga, and fellow "scout" Biuku Gasa found the crew of torpedo boat PT-109 — including its skipper, Lt. Kennedy, the future president — after their vessel was cut in two by a Japanese destroyer.

Two members of the crew were killed in the collision in the Blackett Strait in August 1943 off Gizo, the main town of western Solomon Islands.
