ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Islamic militants ambushed a large convoy of military vehicles in troubled northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, seizing more than 100 soldiers after taking their weapons, officials said.
The soldiers were traveling in 16 trucks and providing security for trucks carrying food between Wana, the main town in South Waziristan and Ladha, another town in the region, an area security official said on condition of anonymity in line with department policy.
On Friday, authorities, with help from tribal elders, were urging the militants to free the soldiers. The militants had ambushed the troops after fearing they had arrived there for a military operation, the security official said.
