HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) - Catholic bishops on Friday accused the government of making "crude attempts" to divert attention from Zimbabwe's political and economic crisis by publicizing allegations of adultery against an archbishop who is an outspoken critic of the regime.
The bishops said Pius Ncube, archbishop of Bulawayo, had shown courage, moral authority and fearlessness in exposing misdeeds of the government, including a brutal countrywide slum clearance operation in 2005.
"For years he has courageously and with moral authority advocated social justice and political action to overcome the grievous crisis facing our country," the Catholic Bishops Conference said in a statement.
