ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Leave it to Jason Elam to produce in the clutch. Elam, who has scored more for one team than anyone else in NFL history, hit a 42-yard field goal just before time ran out to lift the Denver Broncos to a 15-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills in their opener Sunday.
Elam, who had missed two field goals earlier, almost didn't have a chance to make up for his misses. The Broncos were out of timeouts when Jay Cutler hit Javon Walker for an 11-yard catch with 14 seconds left.
Rather than spiking the ball, the Broncos' field-goal unit rushed out on the field and got the snap off just in time, spoiling what had been a remarkably poised effort for a young Bills defense that lost three starters during the game.
