UNITED NATIONS (AP) - President Bush urged swift U.N. action to end the violence in Sudan's Darfur region on Tuesday during a Security Council debate marked by disagreements between members over how intrusive international peacekeeping operations on the continent should be.
Bush hailed the Council's move earlier in the day to authorize a European Union force and U.N. police to help protect civilians in neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic which have also been affected by the conflict in Darfur.
"We want the words of this council to mean something," Bush told the special summit on peace and security in Africa. "We want it to be said that when the council speaks on behalf of suffering people, those words will be followed by action."
