UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday urged all Darfur rebel groups to attend peace talks with the Sudanese government starting Saturday and threatened "action" against any party seeking to undermine the peace process.
In a statement read at a formal meeting, the council stressed "the urgent need for an inclusive and sustainable political settlement in Darfur" and said the first step should be a cessation of hostilities to be overseen by the United Nations and the African Union.
"The council underlines its willingness to take action against any party that seeks to undermine the peace process, including by failing to respect such a cessation of hostilities or by impeding the talks, peacekeeping or humanitarian aid," it said.
